About Gumnut Music

Founded in Melbourne with a passion for bringing the transformative power of music to our youngest community members, we’ve built our reputation on creating high-quality, intentional, play-based and impactful music education that develops the whole child, not just their musicality.

Our approach blends neuro-science with the Kodaly and Orff philosophies. Our lessons explore collaborative play, storytelling, and engaging activities and resources in an inclusive environment that is attune and responsive to the diverse needs of the national Early Years Learning Framework.

As an intimate team, we pride ourselves on maintaining high standards while still having the most fun. We see and appreciate each member of our team’s unique skills and strength, to build a supportive environment where creativity thrives and innovation is celebrated.

Our Ethos

  • Play-based  Learning: We know that the most profound learning happens when children are fully engaged and enjoying themselves.  The best part is, the kids aren’t the only ones who have fun. Our teachers and parents love their classes too!
  • Inclusive Experiences: We create spaces where every child, regardless of background or ability, can collaborate in music-making. We will teach you how to work with even the most smallest of cues from the youngest of babies.
  • Developmental Focus: Our programs are carefully designed to support holistic child development, whilst recognising and supporting their unique identity.
  • Community Connection: We value the relationships we build with families and communities, recognising that these connections make the music impact even more profound.
  • Professional Excellence: We are committed to ongoing professional development and maintaining the highest standards in early childhood music education. If you join our team, expect you to be a lifelong learner.

The Role

We’re seeking a skilled Early Years Music Teacher to join our small but mighty team. This role offers the unique opportunity to work alongside one of Melbourne’s most experienced and decorated Early Years Music educators while developing your own approach and style.

As an Early Years Music Teacher with Gumnut Music, you’ll be more than just an instructor—you’ll be a storyteller, a guide, and sometimes, a bit of a goofball! All lesson plans are provided but you’ll have the autonomy to bring your own creativity to our proven frameworks, crafting musical experiences that captivate young minds and hearts all while working flexible hours that you can set yourself.

Key Responsibilities

  • Engaging Sessions: Create and lead dynamic, age-appropriate music classes for children aged 0-5 years that incorporate movement, singing, instrumental play, and storytelling. Each class must be led with a ukulele or guitar and a strong singing voice.
  • Relationship Building: Establish warm, trusting relationships with children, services and families, nurturing a supportive and inclusive community.
  • Session Management: Independently manage all aspects of your sessions, from setup to pack-down, maintaining our high standards for both educational content and safety.
  • Community Engagement: Represent Gumnut Music at community events, building our presence and sharing our passion for early childhood music education.
  • Professional Growth: Engage in regular reflection, mentorship sessions, and professional development opportunities to continually refine your practice.
  • Administrative Tasks: Lesson plan learning, attendance records, leasing between clients and management.

How We’ll Support Your Success

At Gumnut Music, we believe in setting clear expectations and providing meaningful support. Your success is our success, which is why we’ve developed a transparent Key Performance Indicator (KPI) framework that serves not as a rigid evaluation tool, but as a roadmap for professional growth that sets our team up for success.

Your KPIs Will Include:

  • Engagement Metrics: Measured through attendance consistency, family feedback, and observable child engagement during sessions.
  • Professional Development: Completion of agreed-upon learning goals and implementation of new skills into practice.
  • Community Building: Growth in participant numbers and retention rates for your sessions.
  • Collaborative Contribution: Sharing of resources, ideas, reflections and contribution to our collective knowledge base.

Support Structure:

  • Regular Mentorship: One-on-one sessions with our lead educator to discuss challenges, celebrate successes, and plan next steps.
  • Quarterly Reviews: Collaborative reflection on KPIs, with a focus on identifying both achievements and areas for growth.
  • Resource Access: Full access to our extensive library of instruments, props, and educational materials.

Are You Our Next Musical Storyteller?

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Doesn’t take themselves too seriously: Is comfortable being playful, using different voices, making funny faces, and fully embracing the joy that comes with early childhood music education.
  • Is a Natural Storyteller: Can present our lessons in a way that captures young imaginations and create lasting impact.
  • Has Relevant Qualifications: Has experience in early childhood education and music education. Is qualified to play an instrument.
  • Brings Musical Skill: Demonstrates competence in singing and playing at least one instrument.
  • Shows Initiative: Thrives in roles requiring autonomy and self-direction while valuing team collaboration.
  • Values Inclusivity: Is committed to creating musical experiences accessible to children of all abilities and backgrounds.
  • Demonstrates Reliability: Is punctual, prepared, and professional in all aspects of the role.

What’s In It For You?

  • Meaningful Work: The opportunity to make a positive life-long impact during a child’s most formative years.
  • Creative Freedom: Autonomy to bring your unique talents and ideas to our established frameworks.
  • Expert Mentorship: Learn directly from one of Melbourne’s most respected early childhood music educators.
